What caused the postponement of the “Crazy Rich Asians” sequel?
Rumors that Jon M. Chu would be returning to direct Crazy Rich Asians 2 first arose in 2018 following the success of the first film. However, over time, there were reports of a change in writers.
Chu spoke out in 2019 after The Hollywood Reporter published an article saying that Adele Lim and co-writer Peter Chiarelli were leaving the sequel due to an alleged pay discrepancy.
“I’m close to Adele, so when we learned she was dissatisfied with the initial offer, the producers, myself, and studio executives took action to ensure we reached parity in numbers between the two screenwriters,” he wrote on social media, in a screenshot shared by Deadline. “It was both educational and powerful to hear all sides of the discussion. Unfortunately, by the time she came up with several different ways to meet everyone’s needs, a significant amount of time passed and she declined the offer.”
Ms Chew added that she was proud of Ms Lim for being able to “stand up for her values and walk away if she felt undervalued”.
Due to scheduling, there may be some waiting time. For example, Chu went on to direct In the Heights and Wicked, and Michelle Yeoh starred in Everything Everywhere All at Once.
“The amazing thing is that everyone got busy,” original author Kevin Kwan told GMA in 2024. “Jon Chu and all the actors’ careers were blown away. Michelle won an Oscar, so they’ve got to do a couple of great victory laps. But now I think everyone’s back on their feet and ready to make Crazy Rich Asians 2.”
