Toronto Tempo coach Sandy Brondello has been suspended for one game by the WNBA for making inappropriate comments during Friday’s game against the Atlanta Dream.
“The WNBA expects all coaches and team personnel to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and respect, which are fundamental to the league,” the league said in a statement Saturday announcing the suspension.
She will miss Monday’s game against the Las Vegas Aces.
During the 111-92 loss to the Dream, the Tempos coach was featured on the airwaves addressing officials after Toronto player Nyara Sabally went down with an injury after colliding with Angel Reese. Sabally was called for a foul and Brondello was heard saying Reese was a “protected species.”
Brondello posted an apology on social media on Saturday.
“Angel, I’m sorry,” Brondello said. “Last night, in my emotions in the aftermath of Nyala’s injury, I used words that I shouldn’t have used. I take responsibility for that. My complaint was with the referee, but my words unfairly focused the focus on you.”
Reese posted on social media after the game: “Are we surprised?!” Tag the Brondello account and follow with the clown face emoji.
“I also understand that my words had an impact beyond my intentions, especially on Black women in our league, and for that I am deeply sorry,” Brondello posted.
“I have spent my career competing, coaching, and learning from amazing Black women.”
The coach added, “I am sorry that my words hurt a community that I deeply respect. I have great respect for you both as a player and as a person, and I sincerely apologize to you, my teammates, and the Dream organization for my comments.”
Brondello, who is in his first season at Expanded Tempo, is Australian. The phrase “protected species” is used in Australian sport to express frustration over the lack of call-ups for players. However, in the United States, the phrase suggests that someone is not human and can be considered derogatory towards black people.
Brondello has been the league’s head coach since 2014, winning titles with Phoenix and New York.
