Some Facebook and Instagram users reported an international outage on Sunday that left them unable to access their feeds, according to an investigation by two internet watchdogs and CNN on both platforms.
More than 23,000 users in the U.S. alone reported problems with Facebook between 3:44 a.m. and 5:02 a.m. ET on Sunday, according to DownDetector, which monitors internet services, after which the number of reports dropped dramatically.
It also reported at least 18,000 Instagram issues in the U.S. during the same period, according to data from DownDetector.
Internet watchdog group NetBlocks, which monitors internet access around the world, said Facebook and Instagram users were experiencing international outages, unrelated to national internet outages.
CNN has reached out to Meta, the parent company of the two social media platforms, for comment.
During the outage, affected Facebook users received an error message saying their account was “currently unavailable due to an issue with the site” and were asked to log in again “in a few minutes.”
