Nintendo raises Switch 2 sales forecast to 19 million units

nintendo has raised its sales forecast for the Switch 2 console for the current fiscal year, as the new flagship console gains momentum.

The Japanese gaming giant said it expects to sell 19 million Switch units in the fiscal year ending March 2026, compared to its previous forecast of 15 million units.

Nintendo’s financial results and LSEG’s forecast for the second quarter of the fiscal year ending September 30 are as follows.

Revenue: 527.2 billion yen ($3.7 billion) compared to the expected 461.76 billion yen. Net profit: 102.9 billion yen compared to the forecast of 63.6 billion yen.

Revenue increased over 90% year-over-year and profits increased over 270%.

Nintendo has been riding a wave of momentum since June when it launched its latest gaming console, called the Switch 2, and its stock is up nearly 40% this year.

Nintendo announced that it sold 4.54 million Switch 2 units in the September quarter. This was down from the “high demand we saw immediately after the launch of Nintendo Switch 2” in the first quarter, Nintendo said, adding that “performance remained strong.”

Since its release, Nintendo has sold a total of 10.36 million Switch 2 units.

Nintendo raises sales forecast for Switch 2

Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bonanza have proven to be two of Nintendo’s most popular games since the Switch 2’s launch, helping the company record 11.95 million software sales for the console in the quarter.

Nintendo has expressed optimism regarding the Switch 2, and the company has also raised other financial forecasts. The Kyoto-based company said it expects net sales for the current fiscal year to be 2.25 trillion yen, compared to its previous forecast of 1.9 trillion yen. The company also raised its net profit forecast by nearly 17% to 350 billion yen.

Look out for new games

Nintendo’s original Switch, first released in 2017, became the second best-selling game console of all time after the Nintendo DS. The hybrid nature of gaming consoles, which allows you to play them both at home and on the go, is gaining popularity.

Questions have been swirling about whether Nintendo’s Switch 2 will be different enough from its predecessor to appeal to users. So far, initial sales of the Switch 2 seem to be strong for Nintendo. Investors will now assess demand this quarter and during the important holiday season.

Nintendo was able to sustain sales of the original Switch for several years thanks to games based on major series like Super Mario and Pokemon, and it’s looking to replicate that strategy with the Switch 2.

Last month, Nintendo released Pokémon Legends: ZA and an offer that bundled the game with the Switch 2 console. “Kirby’s Air Riders” and “Metroid Prime 4 Beyond” are also scheduled for this year.

“We aim to maintain the momentum of our released titles and continually introduce new titles to expand the platform’s user base,” Nintendo said in its financial results announcement.
