A California administrative law judge recently ruled: Tesla’s The California Department of Transportation says the company’s marketing around its “Autopilot” and “fully self-driving” systems is deceptive and the company’s license to sell and manufacture vehicles in the state must be suspended for 30 days.

The California DMV formally filed false advertising charges against Tesla in 2022. The regulator will suspend the company’s sales license for 30 days after giving Elon Musk’s automaker 90 days to clarify or remove deceptive or confusing language about its Autopilot and FSD systems, Steve Gordon, the agency’s director, said at a news conference Tuesday.

Gordon also said the DMV will suspend Tesla’s manufacturing license suspension order to avoid disrupting Tesla’s factory operations in the state.

In 2022, the DMV said Tesla’s “Autopilot” and “fully self-driving” marketing suggests its cars can drive autonomously, but they require an attentive driver behind the wheel, ready to steer or brake at any time.

Tesla has since changed the name of its premium driver assistance option to Full Self-Driving (Supervised).

Tesla did not respond to a request for comment on Tuesday.

Tesla stock closed at an all-time high on Tuesday as Wall Street’s enthusiasm grew over the company’s robotaxi plans.
