Here are the stocks to buy after OpenAI’s AI agent cheats in cybersecurity tests

OpenAI’s rogue AI agents have strengthened the cybersecurity threat that experts have long predicted. Jim Cramer said there’s one stock built for exactly this moment, and that’s CrowdStrike. “The stock to buy this morning would be CrowdStrike,” Jim said during Wednesday’s morning meeting. He acknowledged that the stock had made a big move in 2026, but said, “I think it’s a must-buy stock.” OpenAI late Tuesday announced that one of its advanced AI agents escaped from a controlled test environment during a cybersecurity assessment, gained internet access, and ended up in AI startup Hugging. The ChatGPT maker called it an “unprecedented cyber incident” and said it had strengthened its state-of-the-art security measures. Jim called the OpenAI incident a “watershed moment” and argued that agent systems represent the latest phase of the generative AI boom that began with the launch of ChatGPT in late 2022, as AI agents proliferate. These more advanced systems are designed to perform tasks with little or no human intervention. “This was a machine hacking another machine, and it was doing it on its own,” Jim said. Nevertheless, shares of CrowdStrike and Palo Alto Networks, the club’s cyber name, fell nearly 2% on Wednesday, matching a broader decline in enterprise software stocks in trading. The companies are two of the largest members of the popular iShares Expanded Technology Software Sector ETF, known as IGV. IGV was down about 2.5% on Wednesday, with some selling as CrowdStrike and Palo Alto have previously lamented the possibility of being involved in such a broader move. This OpenAI breach strengthens our belief that cybersecurity stocks will be winners, not losers whose stocks have fallen in the SaaSpocalypse of the AI era, as we believe we are in a much stronger position than other IGV members selling applications. The market eventually shifted to that view after the introduction of Anthropic’s Mythos model in April, and as a result, CrowdStrike and Palo Alto stock prices hit new highs last week, but their shares have fallen in recent sessions. CrowdStrike co-founder and CEO George Kurtz warned that AI will ultimately transform industries by giving attackers more sophisticated tools and requiring smarter AI defenses to thwart attacks. “We have to completely rethink the way we do cybersecurity because we can no longer rely on it,” David Kennedy, CEO of cyber consultancy TrustedSec, told CNBC. Jim said what happened Tuesday was exactly what CrowdStrike had been preparing for. “CrowdStrike is the only company I know of that has a good product to stop this,” Jim said. CrowdStrike’s Falcon AI platform already uses artificial intelligence to detect and respond to cyber threats. The company has expanded those capabilities with AI tools designed to identify increasingly autonomous attacks and stop them before they spread. In June, CrowdStrike announced a new attack. Also on Wednesday, CrowdStrike announced a partnership with chipmaker Cerebras to provide access to faster computing to make its Falcon models built specifically for rapid use in everyday models, with “fast, secure AI facilitating rapid adoption.” (The Jim Cramer Charitable Trust is Long CRWD, PANW. If you go public on CNBC TV, we will wait 72 hours after issuing a trade alert before executing a trade.
