Swedish activist Greta Samberg and Brazilian activist Thiago Avila were sitting on a ship heading for Israel after Israel intercepted a portion of the Islado fleet ship on October 2, 2025, with the aim of breaking Israel's naval blockade.

According to Reuters, a group of activists and politicians expressed fears about fellow Israeli activists as they are part of the aid fleet to Gaza, which was deported to be part of the aid fleet from Israel.

Twenty-one, mostly Spanish detainees landed in Madrid on Sunday, and were seen hugging relatives and supporters in a video issued by the press.

Goretti Sarasibal, one of the returning activists, told Reuters that the group was released from the cell in the morning and taken to a garden where they were forced to see images of Hamas’ attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023.

“We were starving now, so we’re so happy,” he said. “They didn’t give us food all day.”

Rafael Borrego, a companion of Recordy, showed signs of handcuffs on his wrist, and described the prison situation in Reuters video.

“Whenever any of us called a police officer, we risked that more than seven fully armed people had entered our cells and pointed at us with weapons on our heads, and that the dog was ready to attack us and dragged us to the floor,” he told Reuters. “This happened every day.”

Spanish lawmaker and activist Juan Bodaya said that he “we are afraid” of the rest of the prisoners, reflecting previous reports of the dire situation in prisons, reflecting “rotten food”, water without drinks and be-stripped where some prisoners resort to starving strikes.

Dutch activist Marco Tesch added:

“I could barely breathe anymore as they put something on my face and they tied my hands on my back.”

They were among 437 activists, including Greta Thunberg, who was arrested last week on the global Sumud Flotilla, a coalition of more than 40 humanitarian aid vessels.

In response to previous reports, the activists had been abused, the Israeli Foreign Ministry said the allegations were “a brave lie.”

“All legal rights of detainees are fully supported,” the ministry said.
