Coco Gouf quelled a lively challenge from 66th-placed Eva Reese, winning a 6-3, 6-4 victory in Beijing on Thursday, reaching China’s Open semi-finals for the second year in a row.

Bidding to become the woman who became the first woman in the WTA 1000 event, Gauff had to fight through three setters in the previous two rounds and overcome the harsh resistance from the Germans.

“I’m happy with my play today. She’s a tough opponent and even ran, she hit some great shots,” Gouf said.

“I need to stay confident in my game and don’t be too passive when I have a lead. I played one passive point in this game, but otherwise I played well.”

It was a fast and intense start to the first set as both players fired a string of winners and traded early breaks when momentum shaking wildly.

After a five straight-break serve run, it was the defending champion Goff, who ultimately seized control and consolidated to take a 5-3 lead when Lys sent the entire backhand and clinched the first set.

World Number 3 seemed to have found her range in the serve on the second set, softening the holds a few times, but short wobble and several double faults from America added late drama.

However, despite playing in the match 5-4, Gauff held her nerves to close the victory in an hour and 28 minutes.

The two-time Grand Slam champions will then face either compatriot Amanda Anisimova or Italian Jasmine Paolini, who will meet in the second quarterfinals on Thursday.
