The event, co-hosted by Canada, Mexico and the United States, will be the largest in tournament history.

The 23rd edition of the expanded 48-team tournament begins on Tuesday with 104 games between Mexico and South Africa.

Argentina are the defending champions, having lifted the trophy at the Qatar 2022 tournament, but who will take home the prized title in world football this time?

In the lead-up to Thursday’s opener, Al Jazeera has put together a complete guide to everything you need to know about the teams, groups, format and schedule.

What are the groups and teams for the 2026 FIFA World Cup?

⚽Group A: Mexico, South Africa, Republic of Korea (South Korea), Czech Republic (Czech Republic)
⚽Group B: Canada, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Qatar, Switzerland
⚽Group C: Brazil, Morocco, Haiti, Scotland
⚽Group D: America, Paraguay, Australia, Turkiye
⚽Group E: Germany, Curacao, Ivory Coast, Ecuador
⚽Group F: Netherlands, Japan, Sweden, Tunisia
⚽Group G: Belgium, Egypt, Iran, New Zealand

When and where will the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup be held?

The tournament will begin on June 11th at 1:00 pm CST (7:00 pm GMT) at the Mexico City Stadium in Mexico.

When and where will the 2026 FIFA World Cup final be held?

The final game will be held at MetLife Stadium, known as New York-New Jersey Stadium during the tournament, on July 19th at 3:00 pm ET (7:00 pm GMT).

Why did FIFA change the names of stadiums hosting World Cup matches?

To limit ambush marketing by brands not associated with FIFA, the governing body changed the stadium names of all venues to match the host city.

As a result, New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium was renamed New York-New Jersey Stadium, Los Angeles’ SoFi Stadium was renamed Los Angeles Stadium for the tournament, and so on.

What is the format of the 2026 FIFA World Cup?

The tournament will consist of one group stage round and four knockout rounds before the final.

Unlike previous competitions, the knockouts will begin with the round of 32, followed by the round of 16, four quarterfinal matches, and two semifinal matches.

Here is a stage-by-stage breakdown of the tournament schedule:

Group Stage: June 11th to June 27th

Round 16: July 4-7
