The 48-team FIFA World Cup is nearing the end of its group stage matches, with the final tournament starting on Sunday.
Only 32 teams will advance to the next round of football’s most prestigious tournament. It will be the first time that 48 teams will participate in the 2026 repeat tournament in North America, and some debuting teams have already established themselves.

What is the format of the World Cup final?
The top two teams in each of the 12 groups and the top eight third-place teams will advance to the finals.
The finals will begin with the Round of 32, which was introduced at the World Cup after the tournament expanded from 32 to 48 teams.
This will be followed by the Round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals, and third-place match. The final will be on July 19th.
Here’s a stage-by-stage breakdown of the tournament’s knockout schedule:
