The series ended its 11th season on April 11, 2021. Frank Gallagher (William H. Macy) is diagnosed with coronavirus in the hospital and dies shortly after while on a ventilator. This was the most dire scene of the current pandemic. The character, who rarely wears a mask, showed more severe symptoms of alcohol-related dementia and was initially hospitalized for a suspected suicide attempt by overdose.
As he is about to die, he sits in a chair in a hospital gown, imagining himself climbing onto the roof as he recounts a letter filled with words of advice he left for his family. In the post-credits, his body, saturated with the alcohol he ingested, is cremated with explosive results.
Despite high expectations among fans, Emmy Rossum, who left the show after Season 9 in 2019, did not return for the final episode to reprise her role as Frank’s eldest daughter Fiona Gallagher. However, a brief family flashback that Frank experienced included old footage of her.
Apart from his final ascension, Lip (Jeremy Allen White) receives an offer to sell his house and wants to start a new life with Tami (Kate Miner), his son Freddie, and his brother Liam (Christian Isaiah). Debs (Emma Kenney) plans to move to Texas with her daughter Franny (Paris Newton) and new girlfriend. Ian (Cameron Monaghan) and Mickey (Noel Fisher) embrace their new yuppie lifestyle. Carl (Ethan Cutkosky) has a new position at the police department that allows him to stay true to himself. Kev (Steve Howie) and V (Shanola Hampton) plan to move to Kentucky.
One thing concludes well: Rip is recognized for stepping up and doing what Frank couldn’t do for his family.
