Yasser Ibrahim’s stunning header in the 15th minute gave Egypt an early lead against Argentina in the round of 16 match, putting the reigning world champions on the back foot for the first time at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Ibrahim scored from a Marwan Attia corner, his second international goal, shocking holders Argentina at Atlanta Stadium.
The world champions were denied a chance to equalize as Egyptian goalkeeper Mostafa Chobeir saved Messi’s left-footed penalty shot into the bottom right corner.
This was Messi’s second penalty mistake of the tournament. If he had scored, it would have been his eighth goal of the tournament and 21st in the six games he has played so far.
Shobeil’s heroics continued as he denied Mac Allister a chance to equalize after Rodrigo de Paul’s cross from the right.
Egypt were starting to get frustrated after Messi’s left-footed shot from the right side of the box went wide of the top corner.
Chobeil made another superb save, this time dropping low down the left flank to place a hand on Julian Alvarez’s first-time shot from Nicolas Tagliafico’s close-range cut-back, which went inches wide of the post. The goalie needed a place to get treatment after stretching for that.
