EA Hanks is Tom’s only daughter from his previous marriage, Susan.
And while her brothers indulged in filmmaking, she pursued a different career path.
Formerly a writer for Vanity Fair, EA has written for TIME, The Guardian, The New York Times, and other outlets. She is also an author and her book, The 10: A Memoir of Family and the Open Road, will be released on April 8, 2025.
According to publisher Simon & Schuster, the book details EA’s journey as she “traces the same route she took on a long-gone road trip with her mother to better understand the complex woman who dedicated her life.”
In an excerpt from the book shared with People, EA looks back on the days after her parents divorced, when Susan had custody of her and Colin and Tom watched the kids on weekends. But one day, she continued, her mother moved them from Los Angeles to Sacramento without giving her father any attention.
“My father came to pick us up from school, but we weren’t there,” EA wrote. “Then it turns out we haven’t been there for two weeks and he has to track us down.”
In her book, EA also describes her experiences living with her mother, writing that the backyard was “full of dog poop,” “the house smelled of smoke,” and “the refrigerator was empty or full of expired food.”
EA wrote, “One night, her emotional violence turned to physical violence, and in the aftermath, I moved to Los Angeles right in the middle of seventh grade.”
