Apple CEO Tim Cook talks about new health features rolling out on Apple Watch

In an interview with Jim Cramer on CNBC on Friday, apple CEO Tim Cook highlighted semiconductor production in the US and discussed the phone maker’s plans with a huge investment in domestic manufacturing.

“After being global, we can add a lot by sewing the end-to-end supply chain of semiconductors,” Cook said. “We can’t stress how important this is and how much it adds to what we’re doing.”

In total, Apple says it will spend $600 billion on US manufacturing over the next four years. CorningWe have iPhones and Apple Watches available at our factory in Kentucky. Apple also said it will work with many different companies to grow semiconductor production in the country. Taiwan Semiconductors, Texas instruments and Applied materials.

According to Cook, Apple already has “business with 9,000 different partners across the US” and “in all 50 states,” adding that the work has created 450,000 jobs. Cook said the tech giant was “very proud to expand to another $600 billion level this year.”

Apple is taking steps to train more manufacturing workers, Cook said it opened its own “manufacturing academy” in Detroit last month. According to a press release on the new training program, Apple is inviting small businesses across the country to participate in workshops designed to help American companies move towards advanced manufacturing by implementing artificial intelligence and smart manufacturing technologies.

Apple has received “critical support” from the Trump administration to boost domestic manufacturing, Cook said. Last month, President Donald Trump announced that he would impose 100% tariffs on semiconductor and chip imports, except for companies like Apple that are “built in the US.”

“The president says he wants more in the US,” Cook told Cramer. “And we want more in the US.”
