Millie Bobby Brown says she feels ‘safe’ working with David Harbor on ‘Stranger Things’ set
The Duffer brothers had left the door to Port David open three inches.
But while it’s hard to imagine anyone else playing Police Chief Jim Hopper in Stranger Things, series creators Matt and Ross Duffer have revealed that they originally offered the role to someone else.
“That was Billy Crudup,” Matt revealed during a live recording of the Happy Sad Confused podcast. “That’s not true at all. Everything happens for a reason, right? So, once it clicks, it just clicks. But yeah, Billy Crudup passed away. I don’t think he was on TV that much back then, but now he’s doing the morning show.”
But while David may not have been originally chosen for the role of Millie Bobby Brown’s prickly stepfather in Eleven, once he auditioned for the role, there was no turning back.
“One of the casting directors thought he was perfect for the role,” Ross said of David’s casting process. “But he came in and read the book. He only did one take. We weren’t even on set, so we just watched the tape. And we knew right away, this is Hopper. And we just cast him on the spot.”
