Station F, the Paris-based startup hub founded by French billionaire Xavier Niel, is gearing up for a new edition of its F/ai accelerator program to strengthen its position as a stepping stone to promising AI startups.
Launched in January this year, F/ai is scheduled to launch its second batch in September this year and aims to help a small number of AI-focused startups move from initial products to real revenue in a matter of weeks.
At 538,000 square feet, Station F is often described as a coworking space, but its footprint extends beyond physical space, director Roxanne Varza told TechCrunch.
One example is Station F’s Future 40 annual selection. In this selection, the team nominates the most promising teams from among the approximately 1,000 companies it welcomes each year. In 2024, TechCrunch observed that nearly all annual groups have incorporated AI into their core business.
Station F is now leveraging its position as a linchpin of “la French Tech” to have a front-row seat to the rise of AI startups. The startup hub has also successfully leveraged its position to acquire stakes in Future 40 companies. “We are investing (in these companies) starting in 2022,” Barza said.
Station F, aided both by its size and Neil’s connections, has become a frequent stop for officials seeking ties to Europe’s technology industry, with fewer than 11 presidential visits since Macron took office in 2017. It has also welcomed AI luminaries like Sam Altman, and is now leveraging these connections for F/ai.
The first group of F/ai programs was backed by a long list of important technology companies, including AMD, Anthropic, AWS, Clay, Google, G42, Hugging Face, Lovable, Meta, Microsoft, Mistral AI, OpenAI, OVHcloud, Snowflake, Qualcomm, and more, not to mention several VC funds.
According to TechCrunch, the second group will include several more big names: Eleven Labs, Nevius, Rippling, OpenRouter, HubSpot, and GitHub.
“The goal was to bring together all the major companies and make it easier for (AI) startups looking to launch in Europe to connect with them,” Varza said.
The two teams selected from the first batch of the accelerator have already achieved international recognition. One is Alpic, which won the global grand finale of The Pitch, a competition hosted by Deel. And Rippletide, winner of the OpenAI Codex Hackathon.
While the award is rarely a loss, especially when it comes to funding, F/ai is focused on supporting the group’s revenue generation, with a goal of 1 million euros (approximately $1.14 million) within six months. “We had heard quite a bit of criticism about the slow pace of commercialization of European startups,” Varza said. “This puts it on par with what investors are seeing in the United States.”
Investors seem to like the results so far. The first group raised a combined $34 million in pre-seed funding, according to Station F. The team’s track record may also have helped. Of these 20 AI startups, 80% were founded by repeat entrepreneurs, one-third of whom have Ph.D.
The founder profile is so skewed primarily because F/ai selects its cohort solely through recommendations from founders, partners, and investors, a process that can increase the paranoia and elitism that the French tech industry is sometimes accused of.
But while teams can’t apply directly, Varza said they can get in touch with one of F/ai’s many partners and will likely be able to get in touch with alumni soon. She added that Station F has about 30 other programs that startups can apply to.
F/ai seems to be focused on access, having held private chats with Turing Award winner Yann LeCun and others in the past. “It seems like today, if the founders here want to talk to people at this level, they all think they need to go to the United States and participate in a program there. We actually want to stay here and show that we can do it from here as well,” Varza said.
