Salah opened the scoring for Liverpool, but Virgil van Dijk scored the winning goal in stoppage time against local rivals Everton.

The only consolation for Everton fans who watched Mohamed Salah score yet another Merseyside derby is that they will never have to see the Egyptian lose to their rivals again.

The 33-year-old winger, who announced he would be leaving Anfield at the end of the football season, bid farewell to Liverpool’s cross-city rivals in trademark fashion and gave his team the lead as they snatched a 2-1 win in the English Premier League on Sunday.

This put Salah alongside former Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard as the top scorers in the Merseyside derby in the Premier League with nine goals, giving captain Virgil van Dijk the perfect send-off as he scored the winning goal late on.

Asked about his goal in the last derby, Salah told Sky Sports: “It feels great.” “The most important thing was to help the team stay calm and confident. We knew before the game that it was going to be a tricky and difficult game, but I’m glad we were able to win.”

Liverpool found themselves on the back foot early on against a high-octane Everton side, but Salah calmly scored a goal to ease tensions and give the visitors the lead in the 29th minute of the first derby at Everton’s new Hill Dickinson Stadium.

“Many words will come out of my mouth about him in the coming weeks, but he is very important to us both on and off the pitch,” Van Dijk said of Salah.

“Sometimes you show gratitude when players leave, but we are very grateful to him. He is a great teammate. We have been through everything together, good times and bad. He will still be important in the remaining five games that we have to play.”

Salah, who has scored three goals in his last three starts in the Premier League, has improved considerably after a weak season and says he still has work to do.

“I hope I can keep scoring like this and help the team win the Champions League this season. If possible, I would like to say goodbye in the right way,” Salah said.
