Russian strike causes severe damage to Ukrainian power plants as winter approaches, officials say

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russia seriously damaged one of Ukraine’s thermal power plants in an overnight attack, authorities said Wednesday, as Moscow pursued a campaign. Ukrainians refuse heat, light and running water As winter approaches.

DTEK, Ukraine’s largest power utility, said two workers were injured in the attack. No further information was provided, including the location of the factory.

The Ukrainian town of Shostka, in the northeastern Samy region, has been hit hard by Russia’s onslaught on power supplies, officials say.

According to regional head Ole Frikholov, authorities have posted tents where locals can stay warm, drink hot tea, charge their phones and receive psychological support.

He posted a photo on Telegram of people cooking in outdoor kitchens on the street at an open fire on Tuesday.

Shocka Mayor Mikola Noja has listed 11 locations in town where locals can get food and tea. “Please bring your own food,” he wrote on Facebook Wednesday morning.

Russia also struck energy infrastructure in Ukraine’s northern Chernihiv, southern Kherson, and southeastern Dnipropetrovsk regions, authorities said.

Ukraine’s air force said 154 of the 183 Russian strike and decoy drones launched overnight were intercepted or jammed.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian rockets killed three people and injured another in Russia’s Belgorod border region.
