Real Madrid suffered a shocking home defeat to Getafe, their second straight defeat in the Spanish Football League, and are now four points behind leaders Barcelona.

Martin Satriano’s superb first-half volley gave Getafe a 1-0 victory against the Santiago Bernabéu on Monday.

Real dominated the ball from the kick-off and controlled the match, but were unable to convert their pressure into goals and squandered several chances in an awkward match.

Alvaro Arbeloa’s side were left defenseless in the 39th minute when a half-cleared cross was lured to the edge of the box and Satriano fired a powerful volley into the top left corner.

It was a bad night for Los Blancos as Madrid forward Franco Mastantuono was sent off for an apparent dissent in stoppage time.

“Obviously it was a game that we could have done better, but the players worked hard and I think we had a clearer chance than they did,” Arbeloa told reporters.

“But in football, deserving is not enough. Getafe played a great game.”

With French superstar Kylian Mbappé in France recovering from a knee sprain, Madrid lined up Gonzalo García and Brazilian star Vinicius Junior in attack.

The Bernabeu crowd booed at half-time and Arbeloa introduced Dani Carvajal, Dean Huyssen and Rodrygo, but the changes had little effect.

Real Madrid lost to Osasuna last weekend, handing rivals Barça a comeback in the title race, but Hansi Flick’s side extended their lead with a win over Villarreal on Saturday.

After a shaky start to the season, Vinicius was in great form in 2026 and took advantage of some great early chances. The winger ran into the goal, but David Soria made a good save with his feet.

Madrid almost got the breakthrough with a brilliant roulette effort from Arda Güler, but Soria tipped the Turkish forward’s shot over.

Getafe were rocked after a painful collision between Madrid defenders Antonio Rudiger and Diego Rico saw the German’s knee slam into the Spaniard’s head.

After compatriot Mauro Alambari slotted the ball into the goal, Uruguayan forward Satriano broke the deadlock with a superb shot from the edge of the box.

Soria played well, making a save from Vinicius in the second half, and the Brazilian encouraged the Madrid fans to show their support even more.

However, even though Rudiger came close to equalizing with a header, the team could not get much excited.

A disjointed display from Madrid’s side, who visit Celta Vigo in La Liga on Friday, left it uncertain whether top scorer Mbappe was fit to play before hosting Josep Guardiola’s Manchester City in the Champions League last 16.

Mastantuono was sent off in stoppage time for apparently making a comment to the referee, and Getafe were reduced to 10 men when Adrian Riso was shown a second yellow card for kicking the ball away.

“Nobody here is throwing in the towel. This is Real Madrid. They don’t give up until the last game,” added Arbeloa.

“Four points is the distance we can close and we will fight for that.”

Jose Bordalas’ Getafe moved up to 11th place and could celebrate their first win at the Bernabéu since 2008.

Getafe defender Kiko Femenia said: “It’s very difficult to come here and score points. I have to praise the team’s defensive work. Then we scored and we could have gotten another goal at the end.”
