Podcaster Mel Robbins says, “Having fun makes you feel alive again.”

Best-selling author Mel Robbins tackles the theme of happiness, specifically fun, on a recent episode of his podcast.

“I feel like life has become less fun lately,” she said on the show.

Robbins went on to list several reasons why. For example, she says, people become burnt out, overwhelmed by life and world events, and focused on what’s happening on their phones rather than their physical lives.

But “fun is more than just frivolity,” she said. “Just a few moments of fun, I’m talking about laughter, ridiculousness, joy. Those are so important to happiness and resilience.”

According to the Mayo Clinic, the benefits of laughter also include reducing stress, reducing pain, and strengthening the immune system.

“Having fun is not an option,” Robbins says. “Fun is feeling alive again.”

On the show, Robbins shared that the best way to bring more fun into your life is to make one small, fun change every day.

“I’ll wear fun pink glasses.”

“Fun doesn’t have to be a huge production,” Robbins said. In reality, it can come down to a pretty small choice.

She gave a direct example on the podcast. “I’m going to wear fun pink glasses,” she said. Robbins then traded in her signature black-framed glasses for neon pink aviators.

“I love these glasses,” she said.

Robbins says it’s easy to have more fun. Fun can look like wearing colorful glasses, colorful socks, listening to your favorite song while washing the dishes, or sharing funny stories before a meeting at work.

Fun is not optional.

“The happiest people don’t play it cool,” Jessica Weiss, keynote speaker and author of Happiness Works: The Science of Thriving at Work, recently wrote in an article for CNBC Make It.

“They actively seek out things, people, and activities that make them feel good.”

Research shows that happiness is often found in the small things. “Happiness comes from increasing the small moments of joy, fun, laughter, and silliness in your life,” Robbins said.

“Don’t you need a little lightness?”
