OpenAI gives EU access to new cyber models. humans still support myths

OpenAI announced Monday that it will grant the European Union access to its new cyber model, but Anthropic is still holding off on releasing Mythos to the EU.

European partners, including businesses, governments, cyber authorities, and EU institutions such as the EU AI Secretariat, will be granted access to OpenAI’s GPT-5.5-Cyber, a variation of the latest AI model, the company said.

OpenAI has announced that it will be deploying this model in a limited preview capacity to vetted cybersecurity teams. A month after Anthropic released its own model, Mythos, a wave of anxiety over cyberattacks against critical software grew.

“We welcome OpenAI’s transparency and its intention to give the Commission access to new models,” European Commission Spokesperson Thomas Renier said at a press conference on Monday.

He confirmed that an exchange of views had taken place between OpenAI and the EU, and that further discussions on access to models were planned for this week. “This will allow us to closely track model deployment and address security concerns,” he added.

Mythos was released a month ago, but Anthropic has yet to grant the EU preview access to review it.

Renier said the EU is in talks with Anthropic about access, but added that those talks are at a “different stage” than those with OpenAI.

The committee has had “four or five” meetings with Anthropic, but the discussions with the company “are not yet at the same stage as the solutions that OpenAI is considering,” Renier said.

OpenAI releases limited cyber model to compete with Anthropic's Mythos

“AI labs like ours should not be the sole arbiters of cyber safety because resilience depends on trusted partners working together,” George Osborne, head of OpenAI for Countries at OpenAI, said in a statement.

“Modern cyber AI capabilities should be available to many European defenders, not just a few, and we want to help make that happen,” he added.

“Through the OpenAI EU Cyber Action Plan, we will work with European policymakers, institutions and businesses to democratize access to defensive tools that trusted actors can use to strengthen shared security, support public safety and reflect European priorities.”

Anthropic has been contacted for comment.
