During the writing of The Couple, Nicola, who was friends with David before they started dating (a classic romantic comedy come true), even finds herself acquiring a spark of competition again.
“One of the things that I really liked about him and started having a crush on was that he was a great writer. I remember going to class and being competitive in a way,” she explained. “When you’re young, you’re more competitive. So that was one of the first things I fell in love with about him.”
In fact, Nicola knew that she would meet the boy she would marry and that they would eventually write letters together.
“To feel that little competitive spirit again,” she said of their short stories. “It was really cool to see what he would come up with. I’d do something and he’d want to take over the pass. So I thought, ‘Oh, we made this third one.'” That doesn’t sound like me, and it doesn’t sound like him. It’s like a third party. ”
What Nicola wants her readers to take away is to emphasize the importance of what teenagers experience in life, feelings that she cherishes within herself.
