Many American workers are starting the new year looking for a raise, as new minimum wage hikes take effect in states and localities across the country on Thursday.

More than 8.3 million workers in 19 states are expected to benefit from minimum wage hikes, adding up to an estimated $5 billion increase in income nationwide, according to a December report from the Economic Policy Institute.

In addition to the state minimum wage changes, many cities and municipalities with local wage standards also increased their minimum wages Thursday. For example, Seattle’s minimum wage increased to $21.30 an hour, and Minneapolis’ minimum wage is now $16.37.

Hawaii’s lowest-wage workers would see the biggest increase in hourly wages. The state’s minimum wage increased by $2 an hour, from $14 to $16 an hour. Other states with minimum wage increases include Arizona, California, Michigan, New Jersey, and New York.

The federal minimum wage has remained at $7.25 an hour since 2009. Minimum wage levels vary widely depending on where workers live, and state and local laws often set significantly higher standards.
