Marina Mabry tied the WNBA single-game scoring record with 53 points with a hot effort, hitting 9-of-18 from 3-point range in the Toronto Tempo’s 125-97 victory over the visiting Los Angeles Sparks.
Mabry scored nine points against Connecticut on June 19, scoring a then-career-high 37 points in the process, already tying the league’s three-point scoring record.
She surpassed that mark with 39 points in three quarters of Thursday’s contest, then exploded for 14 more points to tie Aja Wilson and Liz Cambage’s scoring record.
Toronto (9-9) never trailed and got going early, going on a 19-6 run in less than four minutes on triples from Mabry, Maria Conde and Julie Allemand. From there, the tempo lead grew to as many as 35 points, with Toronto shooting an incredible 20-of-42 as a team.
Conde finished with 13 points on 3-of-5 shooting from beyond the arc. She also grabbed seven rebounds. Allemand scored 13 points, making a perfect 3-of-3 from 3-point range, and dished out a career-high 14 assists. Laura Juskaite added 10 points off the bench and grabbed a game-high 12 boards.
Meanwhile, Mabry made nine 3-pointers, about as many as Los Angeles (8-9) made as a team. The Sparks made 11 of 38 from outside.
Outside of the trio of Nneka Ogwumike, Dearika Hamby and Ray Burrell, the Sparks generated little offense from elsewhere.
Ogwumike and Hamby each scored 21 points, and Burrell added 17 points. Ogwumike also grabbed seven rebounds and Hamby scored a team-high nine points.
Los Angeles backcourt starters Erica Wheeler and Ariel Atkins were both in foul trouble, and the Sparks bench was without rotational forward Cameron Brink due to an ankle injury.
The Sparks entered Thursday’s contest after splitting a pair with Expanded Tempo in Los Angeles last month, but both were competitive contests.
However, the Sparks suffered an early setback and never recovered, as their leading scorer all season, Kelsey Plum, was sidelined with a foot injury sustained in Sunday’s game against New York.
