Lizzo vs. Jillian Michaels
In January 2020, the former Biggest Loser trainer told Buzzfeed News’ digital series AM to DM, “Why do we celebrate[Lizzo’s]body? Why does it matter? Why don’t we celebrate her music? Because it wouldn’t be great if she got diabetes.” Fans accused Michaels of fat shaming the star.
Lizzo later said on Instagram, “I did nothing wrong. I forgive myself for thinking I was wrong from the beginning. I deserve to be happy.” She also said, “If my name is in your mouth, so is mine. Enjoy the taste!”
Michaels later told E!’s Daily Pop, “There’s no denying the inescapable fact that being overweight causes heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and these things kill people. So not celebrating being overweight because it might kill you is fat shaming, okay. But by the way, I don’t celebrate people’s weight either. I don’t celebrate if you’re a (size) zero. I don’t celebrate if you’re a (size).” 6. I don’t care. ”
“And the argument I’m trying to make is that people have felt marginalized and marginalized for so long that the pendulum has swung to the point of, ‘This can’t hurt me, I love being fat,'” Michaels continued. “And that’s the part I have to say as a health expert, this will kill you.”
“I don’t celebrate being overweight, because being overweight kills people,” she said. “And it’s not honorable or noble to deny that fact just because it’s politically correct. It’s irresponsible and definitely dangerous. But I’m sorry, I’m not going to lie, because it makes you like me. I don’t think it’s in anyone’s interest.”
