Lizzo breaks down in tears ‘devastated’ by death of activist influencer Shirley Rains
Lizzo is celebrating a legend in the community.
Following the death of Shirley “Ms. Shirley” Raines, founder of Beauty 2 the Streets and activist known for helping people experiencing homelessness, the Grammy Award winner tearfully reflected on Shirley’s influence.
“Shirley Raines, the founder of Beauty2theStreetz, an amazing woman and community leader, passed away last night,” Lizzo said in a video shared to her Instagram Stories on January 28. “And I’m shocked. If you know anyone, about my Juneteenth give-back, Shirley is always one of them, every year.”
The “About Damn Time” singer recalled the moment he was able to publicly honor Shirley, who has amassed a following on TikTok for exhibiting her work in the Skid Row community of Los Angeles and Nevada, and highlighted times when she was able to personally contribute to her mission.
“I had a lot of clothes and I saw her going to Skid Row and going to the homeless community and seeing her beautify the community,” Rizzo said. “She helped them feel noticed. She gave them makeovers, haircuts, and clothes to help them feel beautiful. And she used to joke, ‘Girls, everyone get dressed. I put on a Lizzo coat.'”
