Watch Tom Cruise, Katy Perry and other stars at the 2026 World Cup opener in the US
Last Friday night, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s plan surprised some.
But it wasn’t because he danced on his desk or streaked in the park. Instead, the former Canadian prime minister watched the United States play in the first match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on the night of June 12, while also watching Canada play, ultimately missing his country’s first match.
After all, as Prime Minister Trudeau himself pointed out, his girlfriend Katy Perry was performing at the World Cup’s opening ceremony prior to the U.S. men’s national team game.
“Sometimes you owe it to your boyfriend to be cooperative,” Prime Minister Trudeau tweeted in response to The Athletic’s article about his absence from the game against Canada. “But you know who I’m rooting for to win the Cup.”
And in fact, the 54-year-old sent the message home with a Canadian flag emoji at the end of the note.
Perry took to the stage at SoFi Stadium on June 12th with cast members Tyra, Future, Anitta, Lisa, and Rema. She also performed a duet of her 2024 song “Wonder” with 10-year-old artist Tius as flags from around the world formed a circle around them.
