After scoring hat-tricks in the group stages between the 2010 and 2018 World Cups, Ivory Coast are gearing up for their first taste of knockout football. Remarkably, they trailed by just 3 minutes and 29 seconds late in their 2-1 loss to title contenders Germany in the group stage.
Nicolas Pepe was the top scorer with two goals, while Amad Diallo and Franck Kessié also scored one each, highlighting the team’s attacking options.
Diomande, a 19-year-old winger who has been linked with a move from Germany’s RB Leipzig to European champions Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), was the team’s most creative during the tournament, darting forward from midfield and causing havoc for opposition defenders. Diomande’s elite playmaking also contributed to his country’s historic run to the last 32.
“I think our real strength is dispersing the goals. We can use that to catch opponents off guard and be a threat from all over the pitch, including players who come off the bench and make big contributions,” coach Emers Fahe said.
As for Norway, striker Haaland played a heroic role, scoring four goals in two games after being rested in the final match against France.
His outstanding excellence made him a candidate for the Golden Boot, much to the delight of the Norwegians who continue to dream of their big dream of qualifying for their first World Cup since 1998. Captain Martin Odegaard also led by example, scoring two assists.
Ivory Coast’s pre-match preparations will focus on how to stop the towering Haaland inside the penalty area, as they thoroughly examine the West African team’s defense, led by highly-rated centre-back Ousmane Diomande.
