Ireland clinched a landmark series win against reigning T20 world champions India in Belfast with a tense one-run win after India again denied teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi his debut.
Ireland bounced back from a slow start against Stormont to win 154 and lose eight, with Harry Tector scoring an impressive 50 points in his 100th T20 international.
India-born Jay Moondra, who played the first ball in international cricket on Friday, hit Sanju Samson LBW with the first ball of India’s chase.
He also dismissed Abhishek Sharma in the same match and soon after, India captain Shreyas Iyer.
India tried to recover after a rain delay with Tilak Varma scoring 55 points and Harshit Rana scoring 21 points in the final stages, but it wasn’t enough and the game ended at 153-9.
Suryavanshi, India’s 15-year-old prodigy batsman, was forced into the squad for the white-ball tour to Ireland and England after putting up some impressive performances in the 20-over side Indian Premier League.
Suryavanshi has emerged as the top scorer for Rajasthan Royals this season with 776 runs. The records include the 150s.
But the rising star was ruled out, just as he was when Ireland won the first of the two-match series on Friday by 34 runs, marking the first international men’s win over India in any format.
Sooryavanshi’s next chance to make his international debut will come in the first T20 against England at Chester-le-Street, the home of County Durham, on Wednesday.
