India won the five-match T20 series against Australia 2-1 in Brisbane after just 4.5 overs, with the final match being called off due to rain.

After losing the toss and being sent into bat on Saturday, India’s openers Abhishek Sharma, 23, and Shubman Gill, 29, kept a clean sheet and posted a score of 52 before thunderstorms hit the Gabba cricket ground and the players were forced to leave the field.

Gill took control from the start, hitting six fours with 29 not out. Abhishek was dropped by Glenn Maxwell and Ben Dwarshuis on his way to an unbeaten 23.

A packed crowd at the Gabba hung out optimistically waiting for the match to resume, but the weather continued to be rough and the match was called off after about two and a half hours.

They also lost the first match of the series in Canberra, but in the second match in Melbourne, paceman Josh Hazlewood’s bowling helped Australia win by four wickets.

Australia were without Hazlewood and other players named in the Ashes squad as they prepared to face England in the red ball, and India won the third T20 with five wickets in Hobart and the fourth T20 with 48 runs on the Gold Coast.

Abhishek scored 163 runs at an average of 40.75 and was named Player of the Series.

“I think it’s a credit to all the players that we all worked together in each match and we came back from a one-game deficit. It was a perfect team effort,” said Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav.

India, who top the ICC rankings in the shortest format, will return home with confidence and a rich selection of players as they hope to defend their T20 World Cup title on home soil early next year.

Australian captain Mitch Marsh said, “I think it was a good series overall. Both teams worked really hard.”

“Congratulations to India as they won an important match.”
