“We worked hard and the show was a hit,” he continued. “The powers that be at Netflix were like, ‘This is unfortunate. This shouldn’t have happened. There’s no going back. It sets a terrible precedent, so the show is over.'”

“I looked at myself in the mirror and said to my wife, ‘I’m 40 years old, and I don’t want to spend two years of my life doing something, working so hard, and then having one year completely unpaid,'” he recounted. “I’m not going to base my life on having TV and streaming executives telling me how to make a living. So I pulled the plug. That’s it. I walked away and said, ‘I’m not going to do this.'”

In the years since then, Somerhalder has transitioned fully into entrepreneurship and never looked back when Hollywood called his name.
“This is a really honest and controversial way that I got out of the business,” he admitted. “This wasn’t the way we parted ways. We had a lot of offers, but the time has come.”
