Scheduling your hair wash day can feel like solving a math equation. But the real question is not when to wash your hair, but how often.
To answer long-standing questions, Eh! Connect with Nutrire’s Lead Scalp Health Expert and Board Certified Trichologist, Nerida D’Alessandro.
How often should I wash my hair?
Of course, it’s complicated. “The honest answer is that there are no universal rules.” D’Alessandro.
The frequency depends on many factors, but based on her expertise, she says that washing your hair two to three times a week is adequate for most people.
However, your scalp type, lifestyle, and product usage can have a big impact on how often you wash your hair.
When it comes to scalp type, she says, “Oily scalps need more frequent cleansing, while dry scalps don’t need to be cleansed as often.” D’Alessandro.
Similarly, “hair texture also comes into play. Fine hair tends to get oily quickly, while coarse or curly hair may take longer to wash.”
If you’re very active (i.e. regularly sweating at the gym) or use a lot of heavy styling products, you’re likely to experience more buildup and should wash more often.
Ultimately, she says, “the goal is to keep your scalp clean and balanced without stripping it.” D’Alessandro.
