google announced on Monday that the company plans to launch its first AI-powered glasses in 2026. meta The consumer market for AI devices is heating up.

Google plans to release voice-only glasses that will allow users to converse with its artificial intelligence assistant Gemini, the company said in a blog post. Google also said it will launch glasses with in-lens displays that will show users information such as navigation directions and language translations. The company said the first of these glasses will arrive next year, but did not say what styles would be included.

Warby Parker said in a filing Monday that the first glasses in partnership with Google are expected to be released in 2026.

The glasses are built on Android XR, Google’s operating system for headsets.

Google’s Monday update comes after the company announced it would be returning to the smart glasses game in May. At the time, co-founder Sergey Brin said Google had learned from its past mistakes with the smart glasses fiasco, pointing to slow progress in AI and lack of supply chain knowledge that led to higher prices.

“In the world of AI, these glasses will always help you without distracting you. They’re much more capable of doing that,” Brin said in May.

The AI wearables space is gaining momentum: meta leading the group. The social media company’s Ray-Ban Meta glasses have been a surprising success. Designed in partnership with eyewear giant EssilorLuxottica, the glasses feature a built-in Meta AI digital assistant.

Meta also released its own display glasses in September. This allows users to see features such as messages, photo previews, and live captions through a small display built into one of the device’s lenses.

Companies like Snap and Alibaba are also churning out their own AI glasses products, as the small but competitive market continues to grow.

Google also revealed further software updates for its Galaxy XR headset on Monday. These include the ability to link to a Windows PC and a travel mode that allows you to use the device on a plane or in your car.
