Title favorites England will take on Ghana in a bid to qualify for the last 32 after an entertaining display of attacking prowess in their World Cup opener.
Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham and Marcus Rashford delighted England fans with their goals in the 4-2 win over Croatia, but cracked backs have raised questions about the team’s defensive weaknesses.
Ghana, on the other hand, showed a more disciplined and balanced performance as they defeated Panama 1-0. The Black Stars are aiming to advance to the final tournament for the first time in 16 years.
Here’s what you need to know about England vs. Ghana before the match.
“England can beat anyone”: Director Rice, who dominated the Croatian thriller, says
The Three Lions dominated British media headlines with a thrilling victory over 2018 runners-up Croatia, who had one of the most consistent tournament results in international football.
Midfielder Declan Rice said England’s second-half performance against Croatia set a “benchmark” for the team as they aim to end a 60-year drought and win the World Cup.
“We know the level as players and we know what’s required of us. The performance in the second half was probably the benchmark for us in that we have to start the game at that level,” Rice told reporters.
“If we can do that with our players who finish the game from the start, I believe we can beat any opponent in the world.
“We want to be confident in our abilities and what we can do on the pitch.”
But England will be wary of the threat posed by London-born winger Antoine Semenyo of Ghana, who is at the heart of the Black Stars’ attack.

Ghana manager Queiroz says playing against England will be ‘easiest’
Ghana will face England for the first time at the World Cup, and if they win, they will advance to the knockout stages for the first time since the memorable quarter-finals of 2010.
Will the prospect of facing one of the title contenders make things difficult for Ghana?
Coach doesn’t think so.
“This is the easiest type of game, because when you play against England, France and Germany, you don’t have to say anything to the players. The players are very motivated,” said coach Carlos Queiroz.
“Everyone is fully switched on and everyone wants to perform well.
“I know they have three lions on their uniforms, but we are from Ghana and we have 33 million lions to fight for this match,” he added.

“Bukayo is getting better and better,” Tuchel said on Monday. “His movements are becoming more free and he doesn’t feel any pain.

Queiroz also said a late decision would be made on goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Gigi, who was forced off with an injury in the win over Panama.
