How can I protect my hair and scalp from sunburn?
Dr. Maher points out that while your hair acts as a protective layer, parts of your scalp are often exposed to the sun’s harmful rays. “This is why we often see people developing skin cancer in the hair area,” she says.
The easiest way to protect your scalp is to wear a hat (not a visor, according to Dr. Mair). However, recently, sunscreens designed specifically for the scalp, such as mist and powder, are also available.
Just like your scalp, sun protection for your hair is often overlooked and can lead to frizz, damage, and breakage.
“Hair has an outer sheath called the cuticle that protects it. But UVA and UVB rays from the sun can burn away that cuticle, causing frayed, frizzy hair that breaks easily,” she explains. Think of it like using Hot Tools on high settings.
That’s why Dr. Maher also suggests incorporating hair care practices that protect against potential UV damage. Consider leave-in treatments and lightweight oils.
Protect your skin without leaving a greasy residue with dermatologist-approved SPF, treatments, and more.
