Cristiano Ronaldo has bought a stake in Spanish second-division soccer club Almeria, according to a consulting firm acting on behalf of the Portuguese player.

Brunswick Group said in a statement on Thursday that Ronaldo had bought a 25% stake in the club, which has Saudi ownership.

Ronaldo, 41, moved to Saudi Arabia at the end of 2022 to play for Al Nasr.

“It has long been my ambition to contribute to football beyond the pitch. UD Almeria is a Spanish club with strong fundamentals and clear growth potential,” Ronaldo said in a statement.

Brunswick Group said the five-time Ballon d’Or winner, who spent nine years at Real Madrid and is the club’s all-time top scorer, bought Almería’s stake through its subsidiary CR7 Sports Investments.

Almeria has been under the control of Saudi owners for more than six years.

Saudi businessman Mohammed Al-Khereij purchased the club from Turki Alalcik, who became a key figure in sports promotion as the head of the Saudi General Entertainment Authority, and became the club’s new owner and president in 2025.

“We are very happy that Cristiano has chosen our club as an investment destination,” Al Hereij said in a statement. “He knows the Spanish league well and understands the potential of what we are building here, both in terms of the team and the academy.”

Financial details were not disclosed.

Almeria currently sit in third place in Spain’s second division. They were relegated from La Liga in the 2023-24 season.

The Portuguese great’s net worth is estimated at $1.4 billion, according to the latest Bloomberg Billionaires Index, which announced in October that Ronaldo became the first soccer player to reach billionaire status.
