Defensive failures cost Barcelona and Manchester City dearly as both teams suffered notable defeats in the Champions League on Tuesday.
Chelsea moved closer to the top with a comfortable 3-0 win over 10-man Barcelona, their third league win.

Just before halftime, defender Ronald Araujo was shown a second yellow card, resulting in Barcelona’s second loss with one man down.
The hosts scored through an own goal from Jules Kounde in the 27th minute, a good effort from Estevao in the 55th minute and a close range shot from Liam Delap in the 73rd minute.
Leverkusen, Man City woes continue
In Josep Guardiola’s 100th Champions League match as City manager, his side struggled to cope with Bayer Leverkusen’s quick transitions and lost 2-0, while Barcelona received an own goal and a red card in a 3-0 defeat at Chelsea.
Guardiola made 10 changes to his starting XI after Saturday’s Premier League loss to Newcastle, with Erling Haaland also on the bench, but it did not have the desired effect.
Alejandro Grimaldo scored his first home goal for Leverkusen in the 23rd minute with a low shot into the far corner, and Patrik Schick headed in his second goal in the 54th minute.
City could have moved into the lead if they won, but the night ended with the top three remaining unchanged. Bayern Munich, Arsenal and Inter Milan will play on Wednesday.
Benfica and Napoli also recorded wins
Manager Jose Mourinho set up a 2-0 victory over struggling Ajax with an early goal from Samuel Dahl, giving him his first Champions League win at new club Benfica. The two undefeated teams met in the Netherlands and were ranked 36th against 35th in the pre-match standings.
After Benfica’s experienced defender Nicolas Otamendi’s header was saved by Ajax goalkeeper Vitesslav Jarosz, left-back Dar finished off the rebound with an unstoppable volley. Leandro Barreiro added a second goal in the 90th minute.
Ajax have lost all five of their Champions League games and have only won one of their last 10 games in all competitions.
Canadian forward Promise David scored the only goal as Belgian side Union Saint Giroise defeated injured side Galatasaray 1-0. The Turkish club finished with 10 men as Champions League top scorer Viktor Osimhen was absent due to injury and 18-year-old defender Arda Uñay received two yellow cards.
Scott McTominay scored the opening goal as Napoli beat Azerbaijan’s Qarabag 2-0. Napoli fans commemorated the fifth anniversary of the death of club legend Diego Maradona.
