For decades, Cape Verde was known solely for its crystal clear waters and white sand beaches.

But the soccer fairy tale that unfolded in North America in June has dramatically raised the profile of this small island nation around the world.

Cape Verde turned their fans from dreamers to believers and wrote the story of a time when their first-ever World Cup team became the smallest country to reach the finals.

Come Friday, the archipelago of 10 islands in the Atlantic Ocean will take on reigning champion Argentina in a battle that has been compared to David vs. Goliath.

Here’s what you need to know about Cape Verde.

Where is Cape Verde?

Cape Verde is an island nation off the west coast of Africa.

How did Cape Verde perform at the 2026 World Cup?

Cape Verde achieved the unthinkable by reaching the final round of the World Cup and finishing second in a difficult group. They recorded three points, keeping favorites Spain, former champions Uruguay and Saudi Arabia to draws. That was enough to send them to the last 32.

Why is Cape Verde hosting the World Cup historic?

As a country with a population of just over 500,000, expectations were low for Cape Verde’s first World Cup appearance. However, the Blue Sharks, who showed a fairy-tale success in the African qualifying round, lived up to their reputation for giant killing and continued their dream-like run in North America.

They are the smallest nation to reach the knockout stages in the 96-year history of the World Cup.

Cape Verde’s success has been in the cards for some time, with a soccer recruiting strategy built on leveraging a large, discrete community of promising players. Of the 11 starting players who played in the final group game, which drew 0-0 against Saudi Arabia, six were born outside the country. Three were born in the Netherlands, and the others were from the Republic of Ireland, France and Portugal.

When will Cape Verde play Argentina?

Cape Verde will face title holders Argentina in the Round of 32 in Miami on Friday. The match starts at 5pm (22:00 GMT).

Who is Cape Verde goalkeeper Vosinha?

Cape Verde’s 40-year-old goalkeeper Vosinha was undoubtedly the hero of the opening World Cup, keeping two clean sheets in three games. He made seven saves in a goalless draw with European champions Spain, keeping talented Lamine Yamal at bay.

His flawless performance between the sticks made him an overnight social media sensation. Vozinya’s Instagram followers have soared from around 500,000 to 17.4 million as of Wednesday.

That’s more than some of the world’s most famous athletes, including NFL legend Tom Brady and NBA star Victor Wembaneyama.

Who is Cape Verde’s best player?

Apart from Bosinha (real name Josimar José Evora Díaz), Cape Verde center back Dinny Borges and defensive midfielder Kevin Pina have played key roles in the team’s success so far. Pina also scored one goal, along with Helio Varela.

The 2026 World Cup will not be Cape Verde’s first major competition. They have competed in the African Cup of Nations (AFCON), the continent’s featured football event, four times. Cape Verde’s best results were reaching the quarterfinals in its first year in 2013 and in its last appearance in 2023.

They came close to qualifying for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, but were ultimately eliminated in the final group match.

What is Cape Verde’s FIFA world ranking?

Cape Verde ranks 64th.

Why is Cape Verde called Blue Shark?

Their football team is nicknamed “Tubaros Azuis”, which means “Blue Sharks” in Portuguese. This is another name for the majestic blue shark that lives in the Atlantic waters around Cape Verde, and the archipelago is home to several species of sharks and rays.
