At least 29 people were killed and around 50 injured at a rally held by Tamil actor and politician Vijay from Tamil Nadu in southern Tamil state, the Hindu newspaper reported on Saturday, citing the state’s health minister MA. Subramanian.
According to the report, a large crowd, part of Vijay’s ongoing state tour, gathered at the rally, for Vijay’s political party, Tamiraga Vetri Kajagam.
Vijay, who passes only one name, is running a campaign ahead of the state elections held early next year.
At least 44 doctors have been sent to Karuru from areas near Tiruchirappali and Salem, the report added.
“The unfortunate incident at a political rally in Karuru, Tamil Nadu is deeply saddened,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a post in X.
The appeal to the offices of Tamil Nadu’s Ministry of Health and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin was unanswered.
“The news from Karuru is worried,” Stalin told the X-Post, adding that he had provided ministers and officials with urgent medical assistance to those who fell at Karuru meetings and ordered additional assistance from nearby Tiruchirappali.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
