Anthropic has been following OpenAI since announcing ChatGPT in late 2022. Looks like we’ve finally caught up.

The artificial intelligence startup, founded five years ago by former OpenAI executives, is in talks with investors to raise money at a valuation of $900 billion, according to people familiar with the matter. No term sheet has been signed and negotiations are ongoing, said the people, who requested anonymity because the talks are private.

An Anthropic spokesperson declined to comment. Bloomberg first reported on the potential funding.

OpenAI was valued at $852 billion as of late March after completing a record $122 billion funding round. It has significant contributions from strategic investors, including up to $50 billion. Amazonfrom $30 billion Nvidia and $30 billion from Softbank.

Anthropic, on the other hand, was valued at $380 billion in February.

Anthropic, which has been racing to keep pace with OpenAI in recent years, is best known for developing a family of AI models called Claude.

The company released its latest model, Claude Opus 4.7, earlier this month, and calls it the best product available to the public. But just days earlier, Anthropic captivated Wall Street by announcing the Claude Mythos Preview, a model with advanced cybersecurity features available only to a select group of companies.

Mythos has sparked a number of high-profile meetings in recent weeks between members of the Trump administration, tech CEOs and bank executives, and the model is part of the reason Anthropic is seeking new capital. The company needs to be able to buy the computing it needs to run Mythos, according to people familiar with the company’s plans.

Over the past few weeks, Anthropic has been putting computing first.

Earlier this month, the company signed a deal with Amazon primarily focused on AI infrastructure. Amazon agreed to invest up to $25 billion in Anthropic, and Anthropic secured up to 5 gigawatts of compute power to train and deploy Claude AI models.

As part of the announcement with Google and Broadcom, Anthropic also secured 5 gigawatts worth of computing capacity to start coming online next year. Earlier this month, Google also announced plans to invest up to $40 billion in Anthropic.

The company’s momentum has been accelerating since last year, when it released its most popular AI coding assistant, Claude Code. The company announced earlier this month that annual sales had reached $30 billion. Last year, it made about $10 billion in revenue.
