Algerian goalkeeper Luca Zidane suffered a fractured jaw while playing for Granada in the Spanish second division soccer league, and his participation in the World Cup is in doubt.
The son of former France great Zinedine Zidane was taken to hospital with a concussion after colliding with an opponent during his team’s 4-2 home defeat to Almeria on Sunday.
“The player will consult with the club’s medical staff and a decision on his future treatment will be made in the coming hours,” the club said in a statement late Monday.
Spanish media reports said the 27-year-old suffered a concussion in the collision and underwent a number of tests. Spanish sports newspaper Marca reported that tests confirmed a “fracture of the jaw and jaw.”
He is expected to miss the remainder of the season and could be out for even longer if surgery is required.
Luca Zidane is Algeria’s first-choice goalkeeper, with back-up options Anthony Mandrea and Melvin Mastill currently out injured.
Zidane becomes the latest player to suffer an injury ahead of the World Cup, which begins on June 11.
Algeria’s World Cup campaign begins on June 16th with a match against reigning champions Argentina.
