Adobe acquires image and video enhancement tools maker Topaz Labs

Adobe announced Thursday that it will acquire Topaz Labs, which provides AI models for video and image enhancement, and make it part of its creative business.

Topaz Labs, which won an Emmy Award last year for its production technology, has been around for more than 20 years and creates tools to enhance videos and images. In recent years, the company has released its own models: Astra for AI video upscaling and Wonder for image retouching and enhancement. The startup is also working on technology that makes it easy to run large video models on consumer-grade GPUs.

Adobe, which already offers some of Topaz’s tools in its Creative Cloud suite, announced it will integrate Topaz’s models into its Firefly AI app and other parts of its image and video editing suite. Adobe said Topaz’s products will be available as standalone services through its website.

Deepa Subramaniam, vice president of product marketing for Adobe’s Creative Cloud, said professionals who want to combine real-world footage with AI clips can use Topaz’s products for tasks such as sharpening details, reducing noise, and restoring archival footage.

“Topaz Labs brings deep expertise in optimizing and running large, complex AI models directly on devices. This will help Adobe deliver faster, more responsive experiences for customers and make advanced AI more accessible and cost-effective for creatives. Additionally, Topaz “Labs is trusted by professionals in all creative fields, from designers and video professionals to photographers and corporate creative teams,” Subramaniam said in an emailed statement.

Adobe has been in fierce competition with Blackmagic Design, owner of Canva and DaVinci Resolve, in the image and video editing space. Adobe packs AI into all of its apps and has even created an AI-centric media editing studio with Firefly. By acquiring startups like Topaz Labs, Adobe hopes to prevent users from relying on other software for video editing and enhancements and encourage them to stick with its own ecosystem.

Adobe said the deal will close in the second half of 2026.
