What should you include in a balanced anti-acne skin care routine?

The key to a balanced skin care routine for acne-prone skin is to keep your skin care simple and consistent. Dr. Bohm recommended that your morning and night routine include only a cleanser, treatment, light moisturizer, and sunscreen.

Clean with a gentle cleanser containing salicylic acid and gentle exfoliation. Follow up with a lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturizer that supports your skin’s moisture barrier. “Many people think that moisturizers cause breakouts, but hydrated skin actually tolerates acne treatments much better,” Dr. Baum told E!

Finish your morning routine with a broad-spectrum SPF of 30 or higher. “This is one step that patients should never skip, because acne often leaves dark marks on the skin, especially in Latinas and people of color, and exposure to the sun can cause those marks to linger much longer,” she explained.

Do you have active breakouts? We recommend hydrocolloid patch or spot treatments. “These help prevent acne scarring, which is one of the biggest causes of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and acne scarring that I see in my office.”
