Norway were forced to make an unexpected hotel change in preparation for their World Cup clash with England in Miami after the team decided they were not satisfied with their accommodation, according to media reports.
The Scandinavian team beat Brazil 2-1 last week to book their place in the quarter-finals, but Harry Kane’s side suffered a rare 3-2 loss to Mexico, setting up Saturday’s showdown at the Miami Stadium.
According to Yahoo Sports, the team spent just one night at the Dalmar Hotel in Fort Lauderdale and decided to leave after players complained about excessive noise from construction outside the building.
“There were some things we could have done better and we fixed them,” captain Martin Odegaard told the Mirror. “We just need to optimize ourselves and prepare as best as possible for the important matches.”
Torls Dahli, Norwegian Team Logistics Manager, said:
“Some may be worried that this will affect the players, but they wanted this more than anyone,” he was quoted as saying by the Mirror.
He added that the support team was able to complete the move in two and a half hours.
“The process of changing hotels is not ideal, but we wanted to take action as soon as possible. Having a good atmosphere is most important.
“We are going to be in Miami for a week and are currently in the US for six weeks, where we will be playing the biggest match in Norway’s history. We have avoided cabin fever so far, but we don’t want to take that risk now. FIFA has accepted that we will have to move to another hotel.”
According to BeIN Sports, the move was also prompted by hygiene concerns.
According to the media, FIFA will take immediate action by facilitating the move and will reportedly cover most of the relocation costs.
Norway national team talisman Erling Haaland said the decision was made to ensure the team was well prepared for the most important match the country had ever played.
“This is the biggest game in our history and we need to be 100 percent,” BeIN Sports quoted the 25-year-old as saying.
He also admitted that although the transfer was not easy, “FIFA understood our demands. The transfer was very confusing, but now everyone is happy.”
According to BeIN Sports, it was previously reported that several members of the team were battling illness, but head coach Starre Solbakken quickly denied the rumors.
