Cape Verde achieved the unthinkable by reaching the final round of the World Cup and finishing second in a difficult group. They recorded three points, keeping favorites Spain, former champions Uruguay and Saudi Arabia to draws. That was enough to send them to the last 32.

Why is Cape Verde hosting the World Cup historic?
As a country with a population of just over 500,000, expectations were low for Cape Verde’s first World Cup appearance. However, the Blue Sharks, who showed a fairy-tale success in the African qualifying round, lived up to their reputation for giant killing and continued their dream-like run in North America.
They are the smallest nation to reach the knockout stages in the 96-year history of the World Cup.
