Brazil and Scotland will meet for the fifth time in the World Cup on Wednesday, with both sides aiming to reach the knockout stages.

Brazil lead Group C with four points and will advance to the round of 32 as group winners if they win or draw with Scotland and Morocco do not beat Haiti.

Scotland are aiming to reach the finals of a major international competition for the first time and are assured of finishing at least third in their group.

Here’s what you need to know ahead of Scotland v Brazil.

Neymar moves towards return to Brazil

The 34-year-old will be available for Brazil’s final group game, but manager Carlo Ancelotti declined to confirm whether he would play a role in the clash at Miami Stadium.

Neymar was dramatically recalled to the national team during Ancelotti’s tenure despite not being part of Ancelotti’s plans, but his fitness and form remain under scrutiny after years of injury troubles and a poor spell at Santos.

The attacking midfielder last played for Brazil in 2023, when he suffered a serious knee injury in a World Cup qualifier against Uruguay.

Neymar resumed full training last week after missing the Group C matches against Morocco and Haiti. On Monday, he took part in his first tactical and team training session under manager Ancelotti.

“Neymar is available,” Ancelotti told reporters on Tuesday. “He has been working this week and will be available for the game. We are very happy to have him back because obviously he can help the team with his quality.

“I know him really well. He’s been working very hard to recover as quickly as possible.”

Scotland aim to make competition history

Scotland are aiming to advance past the group stage of a major international competition for the first time after a number of failures.

Steve Clarke’s team defeated Haiti in their first group game to pick up three points. They will finish at least third in their group, but will almost certainly need points to guarantee a spot.

If not, Scotland will wait nervously to see if they can qualify as one of the top eight third-placed teams in the tournament, along with the first and second-placed teams from the 12 groups in the tournament.

Clarke told reporters on Tuesday: “No Scottish team has ever made it past the group stage, so if we can be the first team to do that, that would obviously be very special.”

Scotland’s supporters, known as the Tartan Army, have been a highlight of the World Cup, and their passion has been praised by locals in Boston, Massachusetts, where the first two group stage matches were played.

They now travel to Miami for a big group stage game against Brazil and Scotland captain Andrew Robertson wants to give them something to celebrate.

“We want to give them something to cheer about. We want to give them something to be happy about. And of course, if we win the game, we have made history,” he told reporters.

impossible rivalry

Scotland and Brazil may not seem like the most likely opponents, but Wednesday’s match will be the fifth time the two sides have met at the World Cup.

The two first met in 1974, ending in a scoreless draw in West Germany.

Since then, Brazil has won every World Cup encounter, winning in 1982, 1990 and 1998.

Scotland have never beaten a South American opponent in a World Cup, losing six and drawing two against teams from the continent.

Scotland vs Brazil predictions

Statistics provider Opta predicted a 68.1 percent chance for Brazil to win in Miami on Wednesday.

Their supercomputer determined there was a 19% chance of a draw, giving Scotland only a 12.9% chance of victory.

Opta calculated that Brazil were the team with the eighth-best chance of winning the tournament.

Although Scotland lost to Morocco in their final group match, they still have a chance to advance to the finals of the 2026 World Cup after winning their first match against Haiti.

Brazil have been on a roll, but their only recent failure was a poor 1-1 performance against Morocco in their Group C opener in New Jersey.

direct confrontation

These teams have met 10 times, but Scotland have never come out on top.

The South American giants have won all but two of those matches, including their most recent meeting in March 2011.

Brazil last appeared in the World Cup in 1998, winning 2-1 in the group game in Paris.

Team News: Scotland

Dinamo Zagreb defender Scott McKenna has returned to training after missing Scotland’s first two games with a calf injury.

Aaron Hickey missed the final game against Morocco and is still questionable for the game against Brazil.

Midfielder Lewis Ferguson is expected to start after missing training over the weekend.

Team News: Brazil

Ancelotti’s side will be without a key part of their attack in Miami as Rafinha is sidelined with a hamstring injury.

The Barcelona winger was sent off in the 40th minute of Brazil’s most recent match, a 3-0 win against Haiti on Friday.

Neymar could return, but the Brazil coach is keeping his cards close to his heart when discussing the return of one of the Selecao’s biggest stars.

Scotland’s predicted line-up:

Angus Gunn (goalkeeper); Andrew Robertson, Grant Hanley, Jack Hendry, Nathan Patterson. John McGinn, Scott McTominay, Lewis Ferguson, Ryan Christie, Ben Gannon-Doak. Che Adams

Brazil’s expected lineup:

Alisson Becker (goalkeeper); Douglas Santos, Gabriel Magalhaes, Marquinhos, Danilo, Lucas Paqueta, Casemiro, Bruno Guimaraes, Vinicius Jr., Matheus Cunha, Ryan
