FIFA previously allowed the use of empty, clear, reusable plastic bottles inside World Cup stadiums, but has now said they are prohibited under updated regulations.

FIFA has announced that fans at the 2026 World Cup will not be allowed to bring reusable water bottles into venues due to safety concerns, after making last-minute changes to stadium codes of conduct.

As recently as last month, FIFA had allowed empty, clear, reusable plastic bottles up to 1 liter (1 quart) inside stadiums, but it announced Thursday that they would be prohibited under updated regulations that took effect from Tuesday.

Other items such as bottles, cups, jars and cans are also prohibited to prevent the risk of injury if thrown at players or fans.

“FIFA is committed to protecting the health and safety of all players, referees, fans, volunteers and staff,” FIFA said in a statement to Reuters. “FIFA has taken the decision to ban the use of bottles to prevent risks and injuries to players and participants.”

“For safety reasons, outdoor bottles are already prohibited in some of these venues, and FIFA is applying this consideration across tournament stadiums.”

The measures have raised concerns among supporters about how to cope with the heat, with temperatures expected to range from 26 to 28 degrees Celsius (79 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit) at some venues. Access to drinking water inside the stadium is also a concern.

FIFA said it would put in place measures such as hydration stations to help participants cope with the situation.

“FIFA is working closely with each host city committee and local authorities to provide heat mitigation measures for fans heading to the stadium. This includes resources such as misting stations, fan and hydration stations around the stadium and cooling tents,” it said in a statement.

“On stadium grounds, 2026 FIFA World Cup water bottle prices will remain consistent with other events held at each stadium.”

The 48-team World Cup will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico and will be held from June 11 to July 19.
