Barcelona star Aitana Bommatti is expected to be sidelined for several months after breaking her leg during training with the Spanish national team.

The three-time Ballon d’Or winner will miss Tuesday’s Women’s Nations League final second leg against Germany, as well as her club’s matches over the coming weeks.

Catalan media reported that Bommatti is expected to be out for “at least two months” as he heals from the injury he sustained on Sunday, and could be out for even longer if he requires surgery.

The Spanish Football Federation announced that Bommatti finished the morning’s training session “in pain due to poor landing” after accidentally falling, and was later diagnosed with a “fracture of his left fibula.”

The player will return to Barcelona and his club to begin his recovery period.”

Bommatti started for Spain on Friday in the 0-0 draw against Germany in the first leg of the Nations League final.

She will miss the Champions League game against Benfica and Paris FC in December, the Spanish Super Cup in January and various Liga F games.

Barça lead the league with six points ahead of Real Sociedad and are joint top of the Champions League phase table with French giants Lyon.

The fracture comes after a remarkable year for the 27-year-old, who became the first player to win the Women’s Ballon d’Or three times, helped Barcelona win the domestic treble and reached the Euro 2025 final against Spain, despite losing on penalties to England.

Spain coach Sonia Bermudez said on Monday that it would be a “huge loss” for Spain as they prepare for the second leg of the Nations League final.

“The atmosphere was a bit down yesterday, because it’s tough when a teammate gets injured, so I hope he recovers as soon as possible,” she said.

“The team is in good spirits and we know we will have support from all over the world. We would like to dedicate the victory to those who were injured. Aitana would have liked to have gone to the final with us, but the health of the players must take priority.”

Spain captain Irene Paredes also lamented Bommatti’s injury.

“It’s discouraging to be out like Aitana, because no one wants to see a teammate injured and suffering,” she said.

“But we are going to move forward. We have other players and everyone is capable of contributing.”
