Portugal opened the first FIFA U-17 World Cup with a 1-0 victory over Austria in the 2025 final at the Khalifa International Stadium in Doha, Qatar.

Anisio Cabral scored the only goal of the match in the 32nd minute on Thursday, giving the Portuguese victory in a match that saw both teams play in a final for the first time at this level.

Austria’s Johannes Moser was the tournament’s top scorer with eight goals heading into the final, but it was substitute Daniel Frauscher who came closest to leveling the score with a low drive that hit the post in the 85th minute, seconds after coming on as a substitute.

Moser’s closest rival for the Golden Boot was Cabral, whose seven goals after tapping in from the Portuguese’s quick passing work were enough to seal victory for the reigning European Under-17 champions.

The game was as close as the scoreline suggested, with Austria limiting the number of efforts on goal and chances to test the keeper by 15-14 and 5-4 respectively.

Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, currently FIFA’s head of world football development, praised the inaugural 48-team FIFA U-17 World Cup to be held in Qatar as a “football paradise”.

“This tournament will change world football,” the Frenchman said.

“We would like all federations to strive to develop youth, and at the moment this is not the case. We believe that this tournament will inspire everyone to make further efforts in the development of youth systems and education.”

After a scoreless draw in regular time, Italy defeated Brazil 4-2 in a penalty shootout in the third-place match held earlier in the day.

Italy lost to Austria 2-0 in the semi-finals, and Brazil lost to Portugal 6-5 in the quarterfinals on penalties.
