President Donald Trump said in a lengthy phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday that they had agreed to meet in Budapest, Hungary, to discuss ways to end Russia’s war in Ukraine.
Trump also said Secretary of State Marco Rubio and other “senior aides” will meet with their Russian counterparts next week to lay the groundwork for a summit with Putin. President Trump did not say when he planned to meet with President Putin.
President Trump detailed his meeting with President Putin in a post on Truth Social.
The call came a day before Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy was scheduled to meet with President Trump at the White House, as Kiev seeks more U.S. support in its war against Russia.
“President Zelenskiy and I will meet tomorrow in the Oval Office where we will discuss our conversation with President Putin and more,” Trump said in a social media post.
“I think we made great progress during today’s telephone conversation.”
President Trump said earlier this week that he was considering sending Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine to increase pressure on Russia to end the war.
